Family discussions around the kitchen table at meal time are great opportunities to talk about safety. Most important it provides a chance to find what your kids really think about the safety issues you bring up. Knowing and practicing are two different things.
It also offers a time to reflect on things that you can do to keep everyone in the family safe from harm.
We will take the inititive to post specific infomation on topics related to family safety. The articles presented will be fairly in depth and thought provoking in order that you may create a discussion around your supper table that will introduce new perspectives about the safety issures you think are important and relevent.
Some things to think about right now about safety issues.
Safety issues are not left to chance in the workplace. It is evident that repetition is important as the workplace has adopted a model that demands daily adherence to safety issues. So many workplaces now require their employees to complete safety checklists when opporating equipment to make sure all systems are working properly. They also require crews entering a job site to hold a safety meeting before starting work. Employees are also required to complete specific courses to address each type of occupational hazard they face during their work routines.
My spouse, Janine, is a teacher, and she tells me that most safety issues are taught in school. However, there is not much repetition. In grade 3 they teach bike safety and after that it is rarely discussed in the classroom. As we know from workplace studies most accidents result from habitual violations of safety procedures and indifference of workers to the hazzards. That is why most courses that employees are required to take are good for only specific periods of time and must be repeated.
ATV operation courses, boat safety courses, and other such programs help. Once these courses are taken people are not usually required to repeat them so safety is not something that is front and center on every one's mind. At the very least, a seasonal review should be the order of the day.
The more family members participate the better the results. Many times children will remind their parents of proper safety procedures so it is important for full participation.
What I wish to provide are the topics specifically related to safety issues for families and provide enough background information to make the discussions as productive as possible.
